They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but after 20 years working as a freelancer Debbie can tell you that one good picture is usually worth more than a thousand words. Capturing the world in photos is our passion and we realize that there is more than one way to tell a good story. This section of our website is dedicated to photo essays.

Porcupine Ridge – A Wonderful Hike in Kananaskis
I always feel like the summer flies by in a blink and I am never able to complete as many hikes or camping trips as I would have liked. This year, Garrett and I made it a priority to go hiking whenever we both have a free day or even a few spare hours in the afternoon. It was a surprise when we both realized that we didn’t have plans on a random Sunday in June and we quickly decided to head out to the mountains. Since we made these hiking plans super last minute (that very morning!) We were looking to do a hike near Calgary. I was also…

Kayaking and Snorkeling in Belize
South Water Caye Marine Reserve is a paradise for kayaking and snorkeling in Belize. On Belize’s Southern Barrier Reef, the 117,875 acre reserve is dotted with beautiful little cayes and teeming with marine life. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is part of the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, stretching approximately 1,000 km (621 mi) from the Yucatan to the Bay Islands in Honduras. Top Ten Galapagos Islands Animals
Inspired by Galapagos Islands Animals The wildlife of the Galapagos Islands has a lore all its own. It was a visit to these remote islands that inspired Charles Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection. Since Darwin’s time, these far-flung Ecuadorian islands have become one of the world’s top destinations for wildlife watching. It’s difficult to establish a must-see list of Galapagos Islands animals, but here’s my top ten. 10 – Sally Lightfoot Crab The “red rock crab” can be found on rocks and in shallow water near shorelines. They are very agile and it’s rumored that they were named for an equally agile Caribbean dancer. Their colors are very vibrant and…

Take the Iceberg Pareidolia Test
A Miami woman who sold a grilled cheese sandwich on eBay for $28,000 USD probably had pareidolia. She believed she saw the face of the Virgin Mary grilled into the bread. To her it was a miracle and somewhere out there in eBay land a buyer agreed. Pareidolia (pronounced per-ˌī-ˈdoh-lee-a) is the tendency to perceive a specific, often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern. There are plenty of famous examples of this phenomenon – from the Shroud of Turin to the Face of Mars. The Rorschach ink blot test used by psychologists and psychiatrists is an example of directed pareidolia. In the test, a doctor holds up a…

Epic Road Trip – Exploring Iceland’s Ring Road
If you want to really explore Iceland, rent a vehicle and plan a road trip along Route 1, affectionately known to locals as the Ring Road. This 1330 km road loops around the entire island passing verdant canyons, massive glaciers, fields of lupines, natural hot springs and so many waterfalls that you eventually quit counting. The Ring Road is the best way to get around the country, but you’ll also want to plan some detours off the main road. There’s much to appreciate in small communities and wilderness areas that lie off the main road. There are affiliate links in this post. If you make a qualifying purchase through one…
