Bora Bora Lagoon – Beauty and Marine Life

In the South Seas just northwest of Tahiti lies an island of unrivaled beauty that is on the bucket list of many travelers. Bora Bora is famed for its white sand beaches and luxurious resorts with over-water bungalows – all surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. On a recent visit, the Bora Bora lagoon and the spectacular sea life in it most captivated us.

Bora Bora Lagoon – The Island and Islets

The Island of Bora Bora is surrounded by a barrier reef and a stunning turquoise lagoon that is dotted with tiny islets. This islet is called Mutu Tapu and it is a great place to have a picnic or just relax in the sun.

Many sailing vessels enjoy the safety within the sheltered Bora Bora Lagoon.

Bora Bora Lagoon might be best known for the over water bungalows around the island. The Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa is a luxury resort that is truly beautiful.

Sea Life

Bora Bora Lagoon is host to many tropical fish. The butterfly fish is frequently seen when snorkeling or diving.

 

The clear shallow waters of Bora Bora Lagoon make it very easy to see stingrays. You can watch them effortlessly skim along the bottom of the lagoon.

 

Three types of sharks are commonly seen in Bora Bora Lagoon, the blacktip shark, oceanic whitetip shark and the grey reef shark. There is so much food for the sharks that they don’t pay much attention to snorkelers.

 

There are many types of coral that grow within the Bora Bora lagoon. The colors, shapes and formations are stunning.

 

With the sun setting, this greater crested tern was trying to get some last minute fishing done.

Snorkeling in Bora Bora Lagoon

Snorkeling in the shallows of Bora Bora Lagoon makes it easy to come in contact with stingrays. This guide appears to have a great relationship with this stingray.

 

When you get in the water with a stingray and they nibble away at your fingers as you feed them, it is hard to hide the excitement you feel.

 

There is a plethora of tropical fish in the waters of Bora Bora Lagoon. You can almost be overwhelmed as the curious fish swarm around you.

 

When snorkeling and looking at the stingrays, sharks will often pass by. This seven foot blacktip shark passed silently by while the snorkeler was engrossed by the stingrays nearby.

 

The beauty and the wildlife of Bora Bora Lagoon make it truly a bucket list destination.
